Rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C), nutrients and enzymes, pineapples (ananas comosus) are also packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that are beneficial to the immune system. In Malaysia, pineapple is one of the tropical fruits that is popular and has encouraging demand due to its high nutritive value and benefits. Currently, these 2 pineapple varieties are being cultivated.
Since 2017, Sagil Estate has planted the MD2 Variety due to its high popularity and high demand in the local and export markets. MD2 has been identified as a key crop under the National Key Economic Area (NKEA) of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). Known by its trade names, “Golden Ripe”, “Super Sweet”, “Rompin” or “Gold”, MD2 is superior than other varieties because of its enrichingly bright and golden colour, sweeter taste and longer shelf life. The weight ranges from 1.5 kg to 3 kg, and the price is based on the current market price.
The Yankee Variety or “Selangor Sweet” has a high level of resistance to diseases and pests compared to other varieties. It is planted in a small-scale size in Sagil Estate and is expected to bear fruit in 2022 since it was first grown in 2020. Our Yankee Variety is grown in tandem with our coconut plantation in an intercropping planting technique in Sagil Estate whereby they are planted between our coconut trees. Comparatively sweeter and juicier than others, the Yankee pineapple has a smooth texture and provides excellent pineapple juice while its centre portion is equally edible, flavourful and juicy.
