IOI Group of Companies demonstrated their unity for corporate responsibility to take a positive action on climate change and fight global warming by joining Earth Hour’s call to switch off its lights for one hour on 28th March 2009 at 8:30 pm.
What started as a green initiative to support Earth Hour at IOI headquarters at Putrajaya snowballed to the entire IOI group that included all IOI local and international establishments, with each one coming up with their own unique ways to contribute to this cause. Its leisure and hospitality hotels and malls – Putrajaya Marriott Hotel and Palm Garden Hotel, IOI Mall Puchong, Puteri Mart, IOI Mall Kulai, IOI Mart Kulai - plus its IOI Properties in Puchong and Johor Bahru as well as its refineries and plants – Loders Croklaan (Asia, the Netherlands, North America and Canada), IOI Oleochemicals, Pan Century (Oleochemical and Edible Oils) - have all pledged to unite with the world to join this green movement.
IOI Group’s employees, customers and tenants are encouraged to turn off all their non essential lighting including the exterior and internal lights (excluding safety and emergency lighting) through Earth Hour messages that are continuously disseminated via internal communication channels such as emails, intranet, bulletins, notice boards and posters as well as through external communication channels via banners, buntings and various advertising means across IOI townships, malls, hotels and properties.
To further engage staff participation, IOI Properties Johor Bahru even organised contests such as “Best Idea on Energy Saving Competition” and “Making Things from Recycled Items”. Intranet forums are held for discussions and ideas on the green movement action are welcomed and initiated. Even at the IOI Oleochemical Industries Berhad at Prai, Penang, the mission to save the planet extends to the facility and production sites that have embarked on energy saving programs and developed an Energy Efficiency working group in the company.
Besides switching off the lights during the one hour, IOI Properties Johor has invited all their staff for a get-together in front of their corporate office in Bandar Putra Kulai to witness the Earth Hour’s official switch-off lights ceremony.
At IOI Mall Puchong, the kiddie rides, carousel, travelators, escalators and cargo lifts will take a one-hour break to let its shoppers indulge in the natural mood of shopping.
On 28th March 2009 at 8:30 pm, romance will be in the air at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel as candlelight dinners will be the order of the hour. The hotel will serve a green menu and organise a “Lights Out Cocktail” party of “green” special cocktails, snacks and finger food. Guests are invited to get together to witness the one-hour official ceremony and indulge in the delightful atmosphere as band strollers serenade them with “green” numbers.
Meanwhile at Palm Garden Hotel, guests will relish on relying on their natural senses as the tinkling fountain and waterfalls in the Courtyard restaurant will rest their melody for one hour. At Mulligans Bistro, guests can chill out over the free flow of special cocktails and be entertained by a rousing dragon fire breathing performance.
As an organisation that is devoted to corporate responsibility initiatives, Earth Hour 2009 provides an opportunity for IOI Group to take a positive action on climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Earth Hour is a WWF initiative that was pioneered in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city campaign, when over two million people switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the lights out campaign went global, with over 50 million people in 371 cities, across 35 countries flicking the switch. Earth Hour 2009 is well on the way to reaching out to one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world.
