Besides conducting our business in a responsible and
sustainable manner, education and human capital development form an integral
part of IOI Group’s CR initiatives. Most of the CR initiatives which focus on
education are organised by Yayasan Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng (Yayasan TSDLSC), a
charitable foundation fully sponsored by IOI Group of Companies which was
established in 1998.
a) Scholarships
At the tertiary level, Yayasan TSDLSC provides various
scholarships and bursaries to outstanding students pursuing degree courses in
recognized local institutions of higher learning in disciplines related to
Agriculture and the Oil Palm Manufacturing industry. The fields of studies are
agriculture, biotechnology, food science, chemical engineering, mechanical
engineering, civil engineering and accountancy.

The
requirements for eligible applicants are:
- Obtained excellent results in SPM or STPM examination (or equivalent).
- Exhibited leadership qualities in sports and extra-curriculum activities.
- Gained admission into the first year of an accredited institution of higher
learning in Malaysia.
- Not receiving any scholarships, financial aids or awards from other
educational institutions or organisations.
The scholarship is open for application between May to June
every year and advertisements are put up in major local newspapers to notify the
public.

b) Young Achievers’ Award
Established in 1999, the Young Achievers’ Awards are given out
annually to outstanding and bright students who excel in both academic studies
and extra-curriculum activities.

Various awards from primary to upper secondary levels, namely
UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM levels are distributed to young students from rural
areas to motivate them to strive for excellence in their studies.
c) Student Adoption Programme
The Student Adoption Programme, launched by YB Dr Wee Ka Siong,
Deputy Minister of Education on 21 April 2008, provides financial assistance to
underprivileged children in order to sustain their educational needs and spur
them to excel in their studies.

262 students from 58 primary and 20 secondary schools in
Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah were adopted to receive RM800 and a school bag
every year until he/she completes primary or secondary school education. 1,789
children from HUMANA kindergartens also received school bags and stationeries
from Yayasan TSDLSC.

d) School Adoption Programme
To date, the Yayasan TSDLSC has adopted five secondary schools
in or near our oil palm estates in Sabah to which we provide financial
assistance to upgrade facilities of the schools in order to provide a more
conducive study environment for their students.
Besides these adopted schools, Yayasan TSDLSC has also given
donations to more than 20 schools over the years for various purposes.
e) Sponsored and Built a New Primary School in Puchong
In November 2007, IOI undertook a fully
sponsored construction of the new SJK (C) Ladang Harcroft in Bandar Puchong
Jaya, one of its flagship townships in Puchong. The school was officially handed
over to the Ministry of Education during an official opening by YAB Dato’ Seri
Abdullah Badawi, the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
f) Yayasan TSDLSC-World Vision Lawas Project
Yayasan TSDLSC, in a partnership with World Vision Malaysia
(WVM), embarked on an educational development programme in Sarawak for the
native group. World Vision Malaysia (WVM) is a support office of World Vision
International which is a global Christian relief and development organisation
working for the well-being of all people, especially children. Every year,
Yayasan TSDLSC pledges RM40,000 to fund the curriculum infrastructure
development of the ethnic Lunbawang community in Sarawak.
The short-term aim is to raise a group of competent native
speaking teachers while the long-term vision is to build a training and research
centre for ethnic pre-school training in Sarawak.
g) HUMANA Kindergarten

IOI Group is also in a partnership with Borneo Child Aid
Society, Sabah (HUMANA), a non-profit organisation providing primary
education and care for children of plantation workers (mainly foreigners) who
are unable to enrol into national schools in Malaysia.
IOI is the main contributor sponsoring the highest number of
HUMANA schools in Sabah and IOI is currently sponsoring 20 HUMANA
kindergartens.
