Since inception, IOI has an entrenched policy on agri-sustainability and non-encroachment of natural forests in its quest to expand its plantation areas. None of IOI's existing oil palm plantation estates are developed new from alienated land or forest, but mostly acquired from 3rd parties over the years with a generation or more of replanting. Hence, a large portion of our plantations in Malaysia (in both West and East combined totaling around 169,000 hectares) are located along established carriage infrastructure and are now in their 3rd or 4th generation of replanting.
Our steadfast policy on agri-sustainability similarly applied when evaluating plantation investment abroad. Hence after many evaluations over the years, IOI expanded into Indonesia only in 2007.
